Jeju island came into existence 700 to 1,200 thousand years ago when lava spewed from a sub sea volcano and surfaced above the waters. Then 100 to 300 thousand years ago, another volcanic eruption formed Mt. Halla. The final volcanic eruption made the crater of Jeju island, Baekrok-dam , at the summit of the mountain. Mt. Halla, in the center of Jeju island, is the highest mountain in South Korea, which rises to 1,950m above sea level. The rest of the island slopes down from its summit and is covered with dark gray volcanic rocks and volcanic ash soil. Approximately 360 smaller cones called as ¡°Orum¡± around the oceanic show a peculiar topographical view in combination with Mt. Halla.



Jeju island has a mild oceanic climate throughout the year with the smallest annual temperature range in South Korea. The temperature for the hottest summer months averages no more than 34.3¡ÆC and no less than -3.2¡ÆC in winter. As such, 1,800 kinds of various plants from polar plants to subtropical plants are distributed. It also has rich underground resources as much as every kind of fish and corals in the clean blue sea area. Jeju island is famous for honeymooners as well as for tourists, So are the bathing beaches for the blue sea with which Jeju is surrounded makes resort life an unforgettable delight.
